Namibia und Deutschland brauchen eine neue gemeinsame Geschichte. Der Poet Keith Vries, Nachfahre der im Völkermord von 1904 - 1908 umgebrachten Nama will sein Gedicht Two Lands in Deutschland zu Ende schreiben und bekommt kein Visum. Der Regisseur Marco Kugel will verstehen, wie der Genozid noch immer Deutschlands Gegenwart prägt. Gemeinsam begeben sie sich auf eine Reise an koloniale Orte in Namibia und Deutschland. Eine Herausforderung für sie selbst und alle, die ihnen begegnen.

Namibia and Germany need a new common history. Poet Keith Vries, descendant of the Nama killed in the genocide of 1904-1908, wants to finish writing his poem Two Lands in Germany and is refused a visa. Director Marco Kugel wants to understand how the genocide still shapes Germany's present. Together they embark on a journey to colonial places in Namibia and Germany. A challenge for them and everyone they encounter.

„Die Götter müssen sich irren“ erzählt die persönlichen Gedanken einer Familie über ein halbes Jahrhundert europäischer Geschichte, geprägt von Umbrüchen, Hoffnungen, Zerstörung und Neuanfängen. Es ist die Geschichte einer Familie, die es sich nie erlauben konnte, das Politische von ihrem Privatleben zu trennen. Die Großmutter kämpfte als Partisanin gegen den Faschismus und für die Revolution im ehemaligen Jugoslawien. Die Mutter rebellierte gegen diese Revolution und sah ihr Land in einem neuen Krieg in Flammen aufgehen. Ich, ihr Sohn, drehe einen Film über ihre Geschichten und trete dabei in einen Dialog mit ihnen. Es ist ein Dialog über verschwundene Götter, ein Ende, das kein Ende ist, und den Preis, den man zahlen muss, wenn man niemals aufgibt.

The Gods Must Be Mistaken tells the personal thoughts of a family over half a century of European history, characterized by upheavals, hopes, destruction and new beginnings. It is the story of a family who could never allow themselves to separate the political from their personal lives. The grandmother fought as a partisan against fascism and for the revolution in former Yugoslavia. The mother rebelled against this revolution and saw her country go up in flames in a new war. I, her son, am making a film about their stories entering into a dialogue with them. It is a dialogue about missing gods, an end that is not, and the price that must be borne for never giving up.
